After the brand had been chosen, some first ideation sketches were made to explore possible shapes. These sketches focused on the brand identity, which translated into fluid shapes with delicate curves, while trying to convey refinement.
Brainstorming was done to come up with ideas for a more sustainable coffee capsule. Based on that, three main ideas were defined for the pod:
using of alternative materials (rice paper)
having multiple capsules combined with a shared wall (to save material)
having an integrated system to clean the pod of the used grounds
The first sketches aimed to combine the shape ideation with one of the capsule concepts each, in a way that the form and the function of the machine would align. Three concepts were selected out of all these ideas and sketches. This was done by making a morphological chart, which can be seen below.
This resulted in three different first concepts that were presented in the elevator pitch to the PCV Group.
Machine with a puncture mechanism activated by rotating the capsule. The capsule is made from biodegradable plastic, with a seal made from rice paper covered by a gluing agent to make it more durable.
Machine operates with a capsule system in which a pack comes with five capsules combined. By having a shared wall, the capsules are able to save material. The combined capsules slide forward after each use.
Machine has a mechanism inside to open the capsule and separate it from the coffee grounds inside, which are collected in a separate compartment. This results in a clean capsule and ground that can be reused.
To choose between the three concepts, feedback from the PCV Group was taken into consideration and a table was created to rate the concepts according to the aspects deemed the most important based on the requirements list. A weighted factor was also used in assess the most important aspects of the machine:
With this, the chosen concept to further elaborate was the Typewriter. Further detail and interface sketching were carried out in order to reach a final concept. See below:
